Salary: £40,000 – £46,000 per annum
Job Type: Permanent, Full-time
Sector: Quarrying / Aggregates / Asphalt / Concrete / Heavy Plant

The Opportunity

We are recruiting a Deputy Plant Maintenance Manager to support the maintenance and operational reliability of a substantial fleet of mobile and fixed plant operating across quarrying, asphalt, ready-mix concrete and construction environments.

Working alongside the Plant Maintenance Manager, you'll help coordinate planned and reactive maintenance across multiple sites while supervising engineers, fitters, electricians and contractors.

This isn't purely a desk-based management position. We are looking for somebody with a strong practical engineering background who understands plant, can support fault diagnosis and breakdown response, and is now capable of helping lead the wider maintenance function.

We're also open to experienced Maintenance Supervisors, Engineering Supervisors, Lead Fitters or Senior Plant Fitters ready to take the next step into management.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Help plan and coordinate preventative and reactive maintenance across multiple operational sites
  • Support the maintenance and repair of both mobile and fixed plant
  • Supervise fitters, engineers, electricians and external contractors
  • Allocate workloads and ensure maintenance activities are completed effectively
  • Inspect equipment and identify maintenance requirements
  • Support fault finding across mechanical, electrical and hydraulic systems
  • Coordinate breakdown repairs to minimise production downtime
  • Monitor plant reliability and identify recurring problems
  • Help develop preventative and predictive maintenance programmes
  • Ensure maintenance and inspection records are accurately maintained
  • Manage critical spare parts and stock availability
  • Liaise with suppliers and obtain quotations for parts and services
  • Support maintenance budgets and identify cost-saving opportunities
  • Ensure work complies with risk assessments, safe systems of work and H&S requirements
  • Support the development and training of maintenance personnel
  • Produce maintenance reports and performance information
  • Provide management cover when the Plant Maintenance Manager is unavailable
  • Support emergency breakdown response where required

What We're Looking For

We're particularly interested in people from quarrying, aggregates, asphalt, ready-mix concrete, recycling, heavy plant, construction materials or heavy industrial environments.

You should have:

  • At least 5 years' experience within plant maintenance, engineering or a related heavy industrial environment
  • Strong practical understanding of mechanical plant and machinery
  • Experience with fixed processing/production plant and/or mobile heavy plant
  • Good fault-finding and problem-solving ability
  • Understanding of hydraulics and mechanical systems
  • Experience of planned/preventative and reactive maintenance
  • Previous supervisory, team-lead or maintenance-management experience
  • Ability to coordinate workloads and maintenance priorities
  • Strong Health & Safety awareness
  • Good organisational and communication skills
  • Full UK driving licence

Relevant qualifications could include:

  • Time-served Mechanical or Electrical Engineering apprenticeship
  • NVQ Level 3 or above
  • HNC/HND in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Plant Maintenance or similar

IOSH Managing Safely would be advantageous but isn't essential.

Who Could This Suit?

You don't necessarily need to already be a Deputy Maintenance Manager.

We would be interested in speaking with experienced:

Maintenance Supervisors | Engineering Supervisors | Plant Maintenance Supervisors | Mechanical Supervisors | Engineering Team Leaders | Lead Fitters | Senior Plant Fitters | Assistant Engineering Managers | Maintenance Managers

If you've developed strong hands-on plant knowledge and are ready for greater responsibility, this could be a strong next career move.

What's On Offer?

  • £40,000 – £46,000 per annum
  • Permanent, full-time position
  • Employee discount scheme
  • Hybrid working where operationally appropriate
  • Career development and increased management responsibility
  • Varied engineering environment across mobile and fixed plant
  • Exposure to quarrying, asphalt, concrete and construction operations

The role involves regular travel between operational sites and some flexibility around working hours, including occasional nights/weekends where required to support breakdowns and operational requirements.
